This guide separates practical setup advice from version-specific assumptions. Ice and Fire has multiple release lines and related community projects, so the exact Minecraft version, loader and file name matter more than a generic download label.
Before you install
Back up your world first. For the original 1.18.2 line, verify that you are using Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2, a compatible Forge build and the dependency versions required by the exact release. Do not install a source ZIP as if it were a compiled mod JAR.
Prepare a clean Forge instance
Create or select a Minecraft 1.18.2 instance, install Forge for that version, launch it once, then close the game. This creates the expected folders and confirms that the loader itself starts before you add content mods.
Add dependencies and Ice and Fire
Place the correct dependency JARs and the compiled Ice and Fire mod JAR into the instance’s mods folder. Keep only one version of each mod. A wrong Minecraft version or duplicate file is one of the fastest ways to create an avoidable startup crash.
Test the first launch
Launch with only the loader, required dependencies and Ice and Fire. Create a temporary test world and confirm that the game reaches the main menu and loads a world. Only then add the rest of a modpack in small groups.
Existing worlds and new chunks
Major world-generation content is safest to test on a backup. New structures and creature generation may be easiest to verify in unexplored chunks because already-generated terrain will not be rewritten simply because a mod was added.
